The Naked and Famous cocktail was created in 2011 in New York by renowned bartender Joaquin Simó. Working at the Death & Co bar, Simó wanted to create a balanced yet characterful drink using mezcal, which is increasingly popular in the modern cocktail world. The result is a cocktail that is both easy to prepare and aromatically rich thanks to its equal proportions.
This cocktail is actually inspired by the classic cocktail Paper Plane. The use of mezcal instead of the bourbon used in the Paper Plane gives the drink a smoky and earthy character. Aperol gives the cocktail a slightly sweet and orangey smoothness, while Yellow Chartreuse adds herbal and complex flavors. Lime juice balances all these flavors.
“The most memorable moments in life are the ones where we dare and try something different.”
Naked and Famous quickly became one of the favorites of modern cocktail bars. Especially since it was created at a time when mezcal was becoming popular around the world, this cocktail spread rapidly. Today, many bartenders consider this drink a modern classic and include it on their menus.
