Suffering Bastard is a refreshing classic cocktail made with gin, brandy, lime juice and ginger ale. The spicy character of the ginger and the crisp acidity of the citrus make for a drink that is both powerful and refreshing.
The Suffering Bastard cocktail originated in the 1940s at the famous Shepheard's Hotel bar in Cairo, Egypt. British soldiers and pilots stationed in the area during the Second World War were frequent visitors to the bar. The story goes that the bartender, Joe Scialom, wanted to prepare a refreshing drink to ease the hangover of the soldiers.
The resulting concoction quickly became very popular. Thanks to the refreshing effect of ginger and the vibrant aroma of citrus, the drink was both invigorating and refreshing. For this reason, he became known among the soldiers as the "hangover savior".
“Sometimes even a little relief after the most difficult days can feel like a great luxury.”
After the war, the cocktail spread to different bars and gradually entered the tiki bar culture. Today, the Suffering Bastard is one of the interesting cocktails that can be found on both classic and tropical bar menus.
