Egan published his 1821 book "Life in London: The Day and Night Scenes of Jerry Hawthorn and His Elegant Friend Corinthian Tom", which was a huge success.

This book was about London's nightlife, pubs, entertainment venues and social life in the city. The two characters in the book - Tom and Jerry - became symbols of the fun-filled city life of the time. The story was so popular that it was adapted for the theater and became a hit in London.

Taking advantage of this popularity, Pierce Egan introduced a drink and named it after the characters in his book. The result was a warm and creamy cocktail called Tom and Jerry. The drink was soon served in clubs and bars in London.
