COCKTAIL RECIPE
Madras
Madras is a fresh and light fruity cocktail made with vodka, orange juice and cranberry juice. It is easy to drink and is one of the classic bar drinks, especially on hot days.
The Madras is a simple but effective cocktail that originated in American bar culture and gained popularity especially from the 1940s onwards. It is thought to be named after the city in India formerly known as Madras (now Chennai), but the cocktail itself was actually developed in America. This nomenclature stemmed from the fashion at the time to give cocktails names that evoked exotic and faraway lands.
Around the same time that vodka was becoming popular in America, bartenders began to create easy-drinking cocktails by combining this neutral spirit with fruit juices. Cranberry juice was especially popular at the time and paired well with vodka. When orange juice was added, both sweetness and citrus freshness came out in a balanced way.
