COCKTAIL RECIPE
Ward Eight
Ward Eight is a balanced classic cocktail made with rye whiskey, orange juice, lemon juice and grenadine. The crisp acidity of the citrus and the slightly sweet fruit flavors combine with the strong character of the whiskey to create a refreshing yet characterful drink.
The Ward Eight is a historic American cocktail that originated in Boston in 1898. The story of the drink is directly based on a political event. At the time, politician Martin M. Lomasney had won an important victory in an election in Boston.
Lomasney's success was especially well supported in Boston's Ward Eight. On election night, he was asked to create a special cocktail to celebrate his victory at the famous Locke-Ober CafΓ© in Boston. The bartenders created a new drink using rye whiskey, citrus and grenadine and called it "Ward Eight".
