Oaxaca Old Fashioned
Oaxaca Old Fashioned is a modern reinterpretation of the classic Old Fashioned cocktail with a Mexican twist. Tequila and mezcal combine with the natural sweetness of agave syrup and bitters for a smoky, rich and balanced drink.
The Oaxaca Old Fashioned is considered one of the most successful reinterpretations of the modern cocktail world. Created in 2007 by bartender Phil Ward at the famous Death & Co bar in New York City. Inspired by Mexican spirits, Ward wanted to reimagine the classic Old Fashioned formula with a different character. The result is this unique cocktail combining tequila and mezcal.
The cocktail takes its name from the Oaxaca region of Mexico. Oaxaca is a region known worldwide for its mezcal production and is considered the cultural center of the drink. The smoky character of mezcal, combined with the softer, vanilla notes of reposado tequila, gives the cocktail a deep and complex flavor. Agave syrup balances these strong flavors in a natural way.
