COCKTAIL RECIPE
Black Russian
Black Russian is a classic cocktail made with vodka and coffee liqueur with a strong, simple and intense flavor.
The Black Russian cocktail originated in 1949 at the famous Hotel Metropole bar in Brussels, Belgium. The cocktail was created by bartender Gustave Tops for Perle Mesta, the American ambassador to Luxembourg.
After the Second World War, bar culture in Europe began to revive. Bartenders were trying to create cocktails that were simple but had character. Gustave Tops wanted to create a strong and clear drink. It combined the clean and neutral character of vodka with the intense aroma of coffee liqueur.
The name of the cocktail represents two elements. The word "Russian" refers to the use of vodka because vodka is traditionally associated with Russia. "Black" refers to the dark color of the drink and the character of the coffee liqueur.
βSometimes the strongest character is hidden in the simplest thingsβ
The Black Russian quickly became popular in bars around the world. Thanks to its simple preparation and strong aroma, it has earned a permanent place among the classic cocktails. Over time, variations on this recipe have emerged, such as the White Russian, which is prepared by adding milk or cream.
Today, the Black Russian is considered one of the best examples of creating a strong character with minimal ingredients. With its simple yet impressive structure, it is one of the timeless recipes of classic cocktail culture.
