According to legend, the head bartender of the club took an interesting decision to symbolically show this atmosphere of mourning. He added dark stout beer into the champagne that aristocrats often drank at the time. So the champagne, which looked bright and vibrant, took on a dark color.

The bartender said that this drink must now be mourned and served the new concoction. The color and texture of the resulting drink resembled black velvet. For this reason, the cocktail became known as Black Velvet, meaning "black velvet".
