What is Up / Straight Up?
Up or Straight Up means that the cocktail is mixed with ice or shaken and chilled, then served without ice. This means that ice is used in the preparation of the drink, but not in the glass when it is served. This method keeps the drink cold and prevents it from getting watery.
This technique is often preferred in classic cocktails such as Martini or Daiquiri. The aim is for the drink to be both cool and have a balanced flavor profile.
How to use it?
To serve Up or Straight Up, first prepare the cocktail in a shaker or mixing bowl with ice. Once the contents have cooled sufficiently, it is separated from the ice with the help of a strainer and transferred to a pre-chilled glass (usually a coupe or martini glass).
No ice is added to the glass during service. The drink is served cold but clear.
