What is Throwing?
Throwing is a cocktail preparation technique in which a drink is poured into one of two containers, "thrown" several times and then retrieved. This technique is particularly used to add air and cool the drink. Throwing is generally preferred for whiskey, cognac or hard alcohol-based cocktails.
During the process, the beverage is transferred over a long distance between the containers, both gently oxygenating the beverage and balancing the density. The result is a smoother, more balanced drink with a slightly foamy texture.
How to use it?
For throwing, the drink and ice are first placed in a shaker or container. Then, the drink is carefully transferred from one container to another and back again. This process is repeated several times. Throwing from a long distance allows air to mix with the surface of the drink and cool it down.
Once the process is complete, the cocktail is transferred through a strainer into a serving glass. The technique can also be used as a flashy and effective presentation, especially in professional bars.
