What is Neat?
Neat means that the drink is served straight and pure, without any additional ingredients (ice, water, soda, etc.). This method is often preferred to experience the aroma, taste and character of the drink in its most natural form. Especially when fine spirits such as whiskey, bourbon, tequila and cognac are consumed neat, the entire flavor profile is more clearly felt.
Neat service allows the drink to be served undiluted. This way, the alcohol content does not drop and the actual strength of the drink is maintained. It is usually served at room temperature and is recommended to be drunk in small sips.
How to use it?
When serving neat, the drink is poured directly into a suitable glass (usually a rocks glass or tulip glass). No ice or other additions are made. The drink is served at room temperature and can be lightly sniffed for aroma before drinking.
Small sips are preferred when drinking, so that all the layers of flavors are better understood. If the drink is too strong, some people prefer to open up the flavors by adding a little water (but this is no longer truly "neat").
