What is Hawthorne Strainer?
The Hawthorne strainer is a spring-loaded bar equipment used to strain a drink from a shaker or mixing bowl when preparing cocktails. It has a flat metal plate on the top and a flexible spring around it. This spring fits into the mouth of the shaker, preventing ice, fruit pieces and other solid ingredients from passing into the glass. It is the most commonly used strainer, especially with the Boston shaker.
Unlike other strainers, it can adapt to containers of different sizes thanks to its spring-loaded structure and offers a more controlled straining process. It is one of the most preferred strainer types both in professional bars and among home users.
How to use it?
When using a Hawthorne strainer, place it on the shaker or mixing glass. It is placed so that the spring part faces the inside of the container. The drink is then poured into the glass, securing the top with the thumb. Meanwhile, the spring keeps ice and large pieces inside.
For a smoother result, in some cases a double strain can be used in combination with a fine strainer. Proper use ensures that the beverage is served clear and clean.
