What is Boston Shaker?
A Boston shaker is a two-piece bar equipment used to prepare cocktails and is one of the most common types of shaker in professional bars. It usually consists of a metal container (tin) and a glass cup or a second metal container. These two parts are closed together and the drinks are shaken together with ice. Thanks to its large volume, it allows the mixture to combine better and cools the drink quickly. Due to these features, it offers high performance especially in busy service environments.
Unlike other types of shakers, there is no built-in strainer. While this may seem like a disadvantage at first glance, it actually provides more control over the filtration of the drink. This is why it is often preferred by professional bartenders. However, if the correct technique is not known, problems such as leaking, inability to open or spilling can occur.
How to use it?
When using a Boston shaker, first add the beverage ingredients to the metal container. Then add ice and place the second piece (glass or metal) on top. The top piece is gently pressed down and the shaker is closed in a leak-proof manner. Then hold the shaker with both hands and shake vigorously for about 10-15 seconds. During this time the drink is both mixed and cooled down quickly.
After the shaking process is finished, open the shaker by tapping it slightly sideways. The beverage is then poured into the serving glass using a strainer. The correct closing and opening technique becomes habitual over time and becomes very practical.
