What is a Julep Strainer?
A julep strainer is a perforated, spoon-like strainer used to separate the drink from ice and solid particles when preparing cocktails. It is usually made of metal and has an oval, slightly concave shape. It was first used in classic julep cocktails, hence the name, but nowadays it is preferred together with a mixing glass, especially in stirred cocktails.
Unlike the Hawthorne strainer, it does not have a spring mechanism. Because it has a simpler structure, it fits especially well in the mixing glass and directs the flow in a more controlled way. This ensures a smoother and more balanced pour.
How to use it?
When using a julep strainer, the strainer is placed in the mixing glass with the curved part facing downwards. The strainer sits on the inside surface of the glass and is positioned to separate the ice from the drink.
The glass is then tilted slightly and the drink is poured into the serving glass. The strainer allows the liquid to flow while keeping ice and large pieces inside. When positioned correctly, it is very stable and the flow is easy to control.
Advantages
Perfectly matched with the mixing glass
Simple and durable design
Provides controlled and smooth pouring
Easy to clean
Long service life
Disadvantages
Limited use with shaker
Does not completely filter small particles
Less flexible than spring strainers
